In terms of internationalisation the board of governors has a paramount role to play, they need to be involved in the internationalisation planning process and be able to question if it is the right way forward for the social enterprise. When social enterprises went ahead with internationalisation, they found that they changed and diversified their governors. Many brought in governors that had expertise in certain business fields, they also looked for governors that could provide contacts and networks. The size of governing boards within the social enterprises that took part in the project varied from 4 to 11. It was however acknowledged that when boards were large, they could be difficult to convene and on occasions it could be difficult to reach decisions.
